Good news: Asakusa is one of the easiest places in Tokyo to reach from the airport. Both Narita and Haneda have trains that run straight through to Asakusa Station on the Toei Asakusa Line.
From Haneda Airport
- Train: Keikyu Line from the airport, running through onto the Toei Asakusa Line
- Time: about 40 minutes (Tobu Railway lists around 21 minutes to Sengakuji plus 16 minutes on to Asakusa)
- Tip: look for trains bound for Asakusa, Oshiage or further along the Keisei line. If your train ends at Shinagawa or Sengakuji, change there for the Toei Asakusa Line.
From Narita Airport
- Train: Keisei Access Express, which runs directly to Asakusa on the Toei Asakusa Line
- Time: about 50 minutes, according to Tobu Railway
- The mistake to avoid: the Keisei Skyliner is faster, but it goes to Nippori and Ueno and does not connect to the Asakusa Line. If you take it, change at Ueno to the Ginza Line for Asakusa.
Which Asakusa station?
There are several, and they are not in the same building:
- Asakusa Station (Toei Asakusa Line) – where airport trains arrive
- Asakusa Station (Tokyo Metro Ginza Line) – closest to Kaminarimon
- Asakusa Station (Tobu Skytree Line) – trains to Skytree and Nikko
- Asakusa Station (Tsukuba Express) – a separate station a short walk west, on Kokusai-dori
Check which one your hotel means before you set off.
Suica and paying for trains
You can pay for most trains in Tokyo with an IC card such as Suica or PASMO, and many gates now accept contactless credit cards too. Load some money onto your card or phone at the airport, and the rest is easy.
Get connected before you land
Your phone's map is your best friend on Tokyo's train network. An eSIM you install before you fly means you have data the moment you land.
Arriving late?
If your flight lands late at night, trains may have stopped or you may be too tired to change lines. A private airport transfer straight to your Asakusa hotel can be worth it, especially with luggage or kids.
